From Bad to Worse
Well, all of Debbie and my plans for the next several weeks have been thrown out the window. Word came down today that the Communication Workers of America (CWA) union has announced a strike will commence in 24 hours. Once that happens, Debbie has to start working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week to help cover the shortage. This means no vacations, no trips, no nothing. I won't go into a lecture on why unions are now too powerful for their own good, but we are not happy with this development obviously. I don' know what else to say other than ... CRAP!!!!! (that's not the actual word I was thinking, but this is a family blog).

Is it for sure? Cause sometimes they do this just to make everyone all jumpy and willing to negotiate. Then they call off the strike pending further negotiations. At least that's the way it worked when I was at a union-dominated company.
If it goes through, does she have to do other type of work, or does she do her same stuff, just more of it? When I was at said union-dominated company, the fear was always that a strike would send the office workers into the factory. Oh, yeah. Can you see me wearing steel toed boots and pouring molten metal?
Here's the funny thing. I went to a website for these types of announcements and it sounds like this is more what you described. The CWA is not necessarily calling for a strike but for the "termination of the contract". In fact, the web site also states to not start making travel arrangements until told to do so.
As for Debbie's strike duty, she fortunately will be doing almost exactly what she is doing now. I personally wanted to see her assigned to the high voltage power line repair work just to see her dangle from a rope 40 feet in the air. ;) I'm so cruel!
This is the mother of your child! : ) yes, you are cruel. But I agree. It would likely be strangely amusing, given all the odd made up words and noises Debbie uses in peculiar predicaments!
Okay, I have no idea how to set up a thing that says it is me saying what I'm saying. Eddie will have to help me.
Anyway, it's me, Debbie. The one impacted by this whole thing crappy situation. First, Stacey, you crack me up. :) Second, I'm thankful that I don't have to do installation & repair or even travel for that matter. Third, I'm hoping the 7x12 work schedule is not a sure thing but more of a "We warned you so don't be surprised." thing. Fourth, and most importantly, this royaly blows if they strike which is becoming more and more likely!!!! Why can't people compromise?! We're adults afterall, aren't we?
Not only is the summer supposed to be filled with fun and travel, but this is the summer Eddie and I get to plan and anticipate the birth of our first child. There is so much to do! Luckily, Eddie and I went carpet shopping last weekend so the basement project can continue on schedule. That is one of the first home improvements that need to happen as it impacts the ones that are to follow.
My optimistic attitue is disappearing. I was hoping that 24 hour notice given today would have never come. Here's one more hope to what Stacey said that it will not come down to an actual strike. In talking with some non-managerment personnel in doing my normal work today (before this was even announced), however, they all want a strike and can't wait to walk out tomorrow.
I guess we can only wait, see, and pray.

I hope it works out okay for you : ) With where I was previously, it tended to blow over. But then again, that was after a few years when it didn't. I guess I just wasn't there yet. : ( Hopefully this will not be the case for you.

Oh oh....Deb and Ed, I REALLY hope this thing blows over . I didn't look at the date of the original post...is it already happening? And if it DOES go through, I will sincerely hope that everything gets resolved really really fast and doesn't spoil your whole summer.
LIFE SUCKS BECAUSE THE UNIONS ARE GREEEDY!
My life has officially begun to suck! We have to work 12 hour shifts seven days a week beginning tomorrow until further notice. Happy 5th Anniversary to me on Saturday. This had better blow over quickly. I have accepted the fact that I might not get to go on my Memorial Day Weekend vacation to see my best friend and her family and that it could possibly ruin my plans to spend my parent's 40th anniversary with them the second weekend in June. Oh, and don't forget. My in-laws are coming in for a visit from June 25 - July 4th. Won't that be nice if a strike or these rediculous work requirments go that long. "Welcome to my house. Enjoy the stay. I wish I could spend time with you but you won't see me much at all."
Oh, and get this, we can only be in the office from 5-9pm. We can't bank hours for such thigs as pre-natal appointments and other important items like church. We have to leave the office and come back. In other words, you are screwed if you live far away and have the doctor's office close to home or church not near the work office.
Thank you so much for starting to ruin a happy time in my life as I anticipate the birth of our first child!
HOW CAN THEY EXPECT TO GET MEDICAL COVERAGE BETTER THAN MANAGEMENT AND THE AVERAGE AMERICAN. GET OVER IT! YOU ONLY PAY 4-7% OF YOUR MEDICAL COSTS. NO MONTHLY PREMIUM WOULD BE GREAT. WHO CARES IF THERE IS A BIT HIGHER CO-PAY. I'LL TAKE IT IF I COULD HAVE IT. JOB SECURITY - I WISH WE ALL COULD HAVE IT IN THIS DAY AND AGE. AND THE PROPOSAL SAYS THEY WILL HAVE IT FOR THE SAME STATE - NOT EVEN THE REGION. HELLO!!!!! THE UNIONS WERE NEEDED YEARS AGO WHEN THE WORKERS WERE ABUSED. NOW THE UNIONS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE INSTITUTION THAT WAS SET UP TO PROTECT THEM. WHAT AN ABUSE OF POWER!
Oh Debbie...that sucks SO BAD!!! I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I imagine you're completely upset and frustrated and angry all rolled into one, and you are totally justified in that.
