There is a printed report from the 1960 Census which has county-county commuting flows and I have a copy at home. I'll take a look and see if there is any good sub-county data in this report.

Dear Rolf --
The Bureau of Economic Analysis includes commuting data starting from
1970.
Although not sub-county data as you requested, county-to-county flows
are available here:

This isn't as far back as the 1950's, nor at the geographic scale you
wanted, but perhaps useful, nonetheless.

Mr. Pendall:
I've been back in our library, coughing, as I page through aging
documents to try to figure out what we have (Little Rock metro area) in
terms of place-of-work employment data. Our digital records go back to
the 1990 CTPP. We have print-outs from the 1980 UTPP, in about five
thick dust-choked ring binders. They were printed out from a long-gone
mainframe computer. It is remotely possible that we have a floppy disk
around somewhere with the data in a digital form, but that would require
some digging.
There are planning reports left over from a 1985-era plan that have the
1980 UTPP data in a somewhat condensed form (still TAZ-level). Let me
know if you are interested in the Little Rock area, and we will find a
way to get the data to you. But it will probably be photocopies - not
digital. We do still have an old vellum map with the 1980 TAZ geography.
Can probably reproduce this too one way or another.
Everything was so primitive back then. But, on the brighter side, I was
actually young! Hope this helps.
